Torquay College Final

My design was based on the layout of the Torquay land. The different contours of the land has different concentrated functions. Like the beach=surfing, the coast=housing, inland=public buildings. I incorporated this into my design of different levels and environments for different learning situations.
Also, I believe that education is not limited to just a room where only the people in the room learn something so I provided free spaces with hardly any walls and adjustable walls. This way even if a person is walking pass by a class they can see what is going on inside and learn something too.
I have provided a variety of different learning environments for the comfort of not only the student but also the teachers. I believe that even teachers have to feel comfortable when they are teaching and incorporate the learning spaces to their advantage. Like the outdoor auditorium for a history lesson acting performance and the large science foyer as a large scale experimentation area. I do not believe in defining a space to a single usage but for the users to decide for themselves and make the most of it.
A variety of sustainable features are used throughout all the buildings because since the school is focused on sustainability I would like the students to have a few examples of these features that they can see as they walk around the school.
As an end result, this site I designed with lots of open spaces and building shapes looked like a small town or a community in a school. I hoped the people of this school would come closer together with this type of environment.

Torquay College 2

Ground floor

First floor
I tried experimenting on different kind of spaces. I believe that not only students want different kind of learning environments but teachers too want a comfortable teaching space. So I placed in lots of different kind of spaces for the class rooms but it turns out that now I have too much of space grade 10 and above dont really hang round much in the school so there is no need for lots of spaces (a lot would be dead spaces). So I'll have to lessen the spaces. Might have to cut off the first floor.
The science labs are a bit different here with the tables facing each other and a water and electric source in the middle. So, I'll have to change that too.
The principal saw my plans too. She liked the building that was focused on individual study so I'll keep it and the large experimentation area too.
I need to work out my landscape the outdoor spaces look too empty.
